Well, for what they're working with, I'd say they didn't do too bad. Though, really wish they had made it two hour long instead of win
Spoiler:
The scene where the wildlings break in, and you just see that brother with the giant kinfe on a stick, bloody hell xD

haha in reply to the spoiler, that made me chuckle too. I enjoyed the episode but that could be because I remain in ignorant bliss of the books until the tv series ends.

Well, I've read all the books. This whole thing took place over four highly detailed chapters, so I kinda get they'd need to miss things out, but still wished it'd be an extra hour

In the books:
Spoiler:
There is a wooden stairway to the top of the wall along with the elevator. Their are over a hundred Thenn raiders sout of the wall, maybe two hundred (memory is fuzzy here). More than they can hold off with conventional means anyway Ser Alister and Janos Slynt are not present at the beginning of the battle. John and some guy I forget (who dies in the tunnel with the giant) lead the defense. The Night's watch barricades themselves in the top of buildings, the inside of the tunnel and the top of the wall. The raiders battle them, and a lot go up the stairway to the top of the wall to open the gate. Unfortunately for them, John had the stairway soaked in oil, and it is set on fire from above and below when they are climbing it. After that strategy fails they try ramming the gate over and over again, slowly wearing the defenses down over days. They break the outer gate and start fighting their way through the tunnel (more gates, murder holes for boiling oil etc). The guy leading the defense down their does die killing a giant. Things are looking bleak when Ser Alister and Janos Slynt arrive with more men from one of the other two castles the watch mans and take command. They send John on the suicide assassination mission to kill two birds with one stone. The show obviously had to condense things, and making the assassination mission John's idea makes him look more heroic I guess.

Okay that episode was epic so I won't say much BUT hector is right. They totally should've included the oil staircase thing that part was epic in the books. Though the hammer slice of death was epic too. Both are really good. Books and TV series. I would suggest both.

Yes, I picked up on that line "people die everyday". I also picked up on the line earlier in the season where Olenna Tyrell tells Sansa in the middle of the wedding how horrible it is that people would kill people at a wedding.
