Steam Issues

Usually when I can't find a solution to something like that I uninstall and delete it and re-download it and install.

Yes I have done that several times.. it keeps telling me that Steam has to be online to update >.< even if I run it as administrator

I know that with steam you can set it to be offline (bf showed me that trick) so is it possible that you are set to be offline? If so, you can change your preferences to be online.

Do you know where I can go in and check that? I can't even bring up the desktop icon, just the web profile.

I look mine up by clicking the menu bar on my computer, typing in steam and then waiting for it to update.  And mine is able to update whether I have steam set to online or offline.  I have sometimes had issues with steam when it is busy and the servers are overloaded.  I'm afraid I'm not very technical so this is probably a case of the blind leading the blind.  Usually when I have issues with my computer, I bake cookies, buy chocolate milk and invite the boyfriend over.  It always works for me

Right all that babbling while my steam updated itself.  I am in offline mode at the moment so to go online, its select "steam", then "Go Online" so its as easy as that for me, but if aren't able to open up steam at all, then that is an issue that is way out of my depth

I have a similar issue with my laptop, where it cycles into updating and when it updates it says it can't log in. I too had tried absolutely everything... And then I gave up.

generally when it comes to not starting, its only one thing to do, reinstall.

I can only get to the website, I can't even get my steam application to work I go to click and run it and I get the Steam has to be online, check your connection. SO .. the only thing I can think of doing is complete wipe of my computer and try it all over again. good thing that it's a new one lol

wouldn't go as far as wiping your whole PC, just do a uninstall of Steam, and re-install it. unless you have tried that.

well i did point out "unless you have tried" :Pbut if that doesn't work, i have no clue whats wrong, or how to fix it.

Could be a problem with your firewall, have you tried loading steam while it is disabled?

No wonder you're offline. You need to have the computer on to be able to play ANY game.

In all seriousness tho, I've asked my hubby. Who knows something about computers (he's an IT manager... No clue what he does all day.).

Can you download Steam for Windows 8, and then download a pack to make it compatible to run on Windows 7. Sounds very unlogic, but you should be able to have Steam running as Administrator from that point on.

But if it is working now after the computer restore (what exactly kind of restore is that? back up copy? last known good config? reformat? ), then it is not the router.

these would have been my basic steps. If one doesn't work, proceed to the next:

1: Check to make sure it is not blocked by firewall/antivirus. Easy to check, just shut them both off at the same time. If it still doesnt work even with them both off, turn them back on.

2: Run some virus/malware scans, might be some malware screwing with your ports. Check Msconfig for weird start up entries. Check task manager for weird crap.

3 or 4: Flush DNS. Shut the pc down, unplug everything (even your router and modem), then turn it back on. Plug everything back in (even your router and net connection) when it is loaded back in or prompting you for a password/profile selection.

4 or 3: Sys restore. Then last known good config.

5: Routers have a reset button in the back. Hold it for 5-10 seconds and reset it. Keep in mind you'll then have to set up your router again.

7: There is no 6! Basically by now you are pretty fucked! But, make sure you're not blocked by ISP.

8: Use a back up

9: Use a factory settings system image

10: Reformat.

Glad the issue is resolved!

Oh and stay with Win 7. If you are using Win 8, many compatibility problems. Win 8 sucks the big one. I went back to Win 7 and all my issues, like you just fixed, went away.
