I started one, going for pure human artificer. Its a 32pt build and I went for max intel, dex 16 and the rest in con. Bit worried about the strength of 8 and already have probs with being overburdened if I don't keep emptying the inventory regularly, so I'll be using a +2 strength tome asap and getting a strength item. The level ups will go into intel, except for one for dex so that with a dex tome it gets up to a base of 19 dex for improved precise shot.

Loving it at the moment although I'm aware that as she gets to mid levels her somewhat overpowered current cross bow damage will pale in comparison to others. Still getting used to using the rune arm and often just ignore it for now. Hope to try and use it more soon.

So far I've only been soloing - now at lvl 5. Finding it a completely different game having to try and keep her out of melee range from mobs and picking off mobs before they can run up to her. Total opposite to my fighter who fights toe to toe with mobs, so want to get the tactics for fighting down before I start to group regularly with others. TBH she's the sort of toon I would hate to group with on my fighter lol -pew pew pew and kiting around and hitting mobs just as my fighter has meleed them down to 10 hp! On the other hand, my fighter would welcome the buffs she can provide.

Still loving the puppy (who has better stats than the artificer!) and trying to make him into the aggro magnet for the mobs while my toon then picks off the casters/archers. The puppy's AI is limited - although enthusiastic he tends to get excited over breaking boxes at times when there's mobs around too ... He got very confused in the catacombs part 4 and had to be directed for most of the time to the action. Trying to keep him from triggering traps is a bit of a pain too, but getting used to hitting his passive mode if I know there's one coming up.

When you say "rogue build," do you mean like a mechanic repeater rogue? Because assassin builds work very differently, since they use different feats and artificers don't have evasion. There is actually a lot of discussion on arty builds on the ddo forums - go to "specialists" when you get there and you'll see it.

I went same as Beth but went 16 in Dex and higher str, mine is 3rd level and I am loving it.

Your Dog gets a module which is treated like a weapon and can wear a docent. Like any other War Forged.

Its the most fun I have had with a class not sure who it will pan out.

Also dont make the mistake I made and chose the repair serious as the spell at 3rd when you get it for free. At the moment Arti spells are super exp on AH.

When I get some time I will post a list of Arti Spells here.

Unlike Beths dog mine wont break boxes for some reason. (which I would like it to) Beth can you please train my puppy a little.

I did get it to open a door in a quest my Art was not strong enough to open so that was cool.

Tod, you can get most of the artie scrolls from the vendor in House cannith. I'm assuming the house is open to all even if the quests are P2P, but if not, just say and I'll get you them to inscribe in your spell book.

well... I appreciate the information at least. I am hoping to make one sometime soon and would like to know more about them. So, Intelligence is most important, and Dexterity second? Does that mean Dexterity takes the place of strength for damage calculation like when using bows? Also I assume from what Tod said that spells are gathered from scrolls and you have access to them all? is that only arcane spells or only artificer spells? anywhere I could find a spell list?

Also how much better is it to have a WF vs some sort of humanoid? Any specific humanoid that you think would be better at this class than others?

Well I found out why mine does not attack boxes, Beth you must have taken sunder or trip on yours

Iron Defender turns into a little box and vanishes when sending a Guild Ship Invite to another player. It doesn't matter if they are in range, it happens every single time you send an invite.
Iron Defender occasionally turns invisible to the owner when changing instances (public or private, most notable when changing decks on the guild ship from bottom deck to top deck)
If the Iron Defender is left in an instance (Using "stay" command, or dead), the only way to recover the Iron Defender is to relog.
Iron Defender Combat Alacrity 1 is level 8, but has a prerequisite that is level 10.
When the Iron Defender is given the Sunder and Trip abilities, it ruthlessly attacks breakables to the exclusion of everything including its own safety. In one instance, the Iron Defender ran into a trap 3 times, while I told it to come to my side and stay, while I tried to disarm the trap (Beginning of Tear of Dhakaan (sp?) Elite). Later in the same quest it would run past a large group of enemies and stand at a box for a second, and then break it. The reason that it does this, is because Sunder and Trip both list breakables as possible targets, and the old code that used to cause other hirelings to go crazy on breakables is now affecting the Iron Defender. I've also noticed, when I attempt to trip an enemy myself, if there is a box anywhere nearby, the box will be hit instead... please, just remove breakables from the possible target list of Sunder and Trip (I'm sure people will still want to have it on Cleave and its brethren).
The Artificer Prestige Enhancement ability, Endless Fusillade seems to have problems with loaded crossbows. When using it with a loaded crossbow, the crossbow will first fire, then reload, and then begin to fire endlessly, which causes a dramatic loss in effectiveness, since there is a reload during the 6 seconds of supposed no reload time. This also seems to cause a brief hiccup with the reload/fire scripts where bolts will fire during the reload animation, and be reloaded during the fire animation.
Iron Defender enhancements do not contain any information about prerequisites, cost, duration, or targets, and such as normal enhancements do.
Iron Defender alignment is True Neutral, preventing the use of certain modules, such as "+1 Module of Pure Good", which would be very handy for early quests such as the Delera's Chain, where without them, the Defenders are pretty much useless. Suggestion: Make the Defender's Alignment match that of its creator.
As far as I can tell, no Artificer only spells can be affected by Extend, such as "Enchant Weapons" or "Elemental Weapons". Also, there is no reasonable way to determine how much time is left on such spells, or if the effects are even still there. Suggestion: Add them to the buff bar.
The Caster Level on potions is not increased by 2, as per the description of "Artificer Knowledge: Potions". Also, "Artificer Knowledge: Wondrous Items" has the same issue, so it is reasonable to assume this is true for all of the Artificer Knowledge feats.
The Artificer Scroll Vendor in House Cannith does not carry the scrolls that Artificers share in common with other spellcasters, making it a pain to track down all of the possible spells to inscribe. Additionally, no vendor in House Cannith carries inscription materials.
Clicking on the Iron Defender's Character Sheet does not bring it to the front.

This was useful info for as well, Cries the PG will not get to see it

I've decided to take the plunge and roll up an arti. I've been considering my options and wanted to get some feedback from those who have some experience with the class before I actually start it. Here is what I am thinking about so far. Are any of these assumptions wrong? How can they be improved upon? What else do we know about artificer that I should be thinking about?

STATS:
Str: only if your going to melee, otherwise dump, arti's get a spell to add int mod to damage
Dex: to-hit for ranged, 19 needed for improved precise shot
Con: never a dump stat
Int: max for casting ability, no CC spells, some damage spells
Wis: I don't see a use for artificer
Cha: artificer's are already great at UMD, more doesn't hurt

RACES:
Human: extra feat/skill, highest possible int bonus in game (therefore, potentially best casters), can take empower heal line to make up for construct essence penalty to positive energy, marks of making for a crafting bot
Half-elf: rogue dil for max damage with sneak attack
Warforged: great survivability through repair spells (these are bonus spells, if I understand correctly)
Drow: inherent bonuses to dex/int/cha, lower con, highest possible int bonus in game (therefore, potentially best casters)
Dwarf/Elf/Halfling/Half-orc: I don't see a great synergy between these races and artificer. I'm not saying they don't offer anything, they just don't have near as much synergy as the others. Elf/halfling offers better to-hit through dex enhancements.

FEATS:
Ranged: point blank shot, rapid shot, improved critical ranged, precise shot, improved precise shot
Casting: empower, maximize, quicken
Doggie: augment summoning
Always: toughness

Potentially useful feats? (feedback appreciated on these):
insightful reflexes (I'd say definitely if you're splashing for evasion)
heighten/spell focus evocation/gr spell focus evocation: I don't have time to give a DC breakdown, but I think arti's should end up around 37-42 depending on gear, completionist, etc. I'll write it up later.
mental toughness
mobility/shot-on-the-run
combat casting/mobile spellcasting

Arti's get a ability that lets them replace Strength with Intel. Wish I had known that would have had a lower Str and higher con.

I'm not a big number cruncher myself, but do enough to make sure I can get the feats and end stats that I want. Saves having to pop for a LR later on which is a lot of TPs. On the whole I think its a boy thing, those who go into major number crunching. Boys like stats, they like numbers, they like facts. I see it in my family when the guys start to talk about football or other sports. Same on DDO. When they start to do dps calculations and so on, I giggle. *shrugs*
