Ah, canned tuna. Gotta love the xenoestrogens and the mercury. Hope you like growing boobs, and going insane with toxic poison overload!

Free advice, and no I am not just blowing smoke. Reading thousands of pages of materials and thousands of hours of research tells you one thing: Don't even think about touching milk or milk products. No yogurt, raw milk, cottage cheese, cheese, nothing. Lactose and whey too. Yep, that lets out a huge amount of fun things to eat, but hey, its either enjoy now or cancer later. Or stroke out and drooling in a care home. Granted, its only happened fifteen times with people I know over six months, but thats what, a 2 in 3 chance of avoiding it? Pretty good odds!

Spirulina - yick, but check. Tuna? Try Atlantic fishes instead (farm-raised organic salmon if you go Pacific). Now, lets see... I've been ill once in 2 years since changing what I do. 38 pounds lost? Check. Blood pressure/blood sugar/pH , super check. Doctor loves me. No more meds. Took 9 weeks to straighten out, 4 more to get primed. Not bad for over 40 and nasty cancer and hypertension history in the family. Damn, even my nails are growing well.

Nice thing is, I can brag, but I also teach.

Farm raised fish should NOT be called organic! That is the most vile disgusting fish to eat. Sorry, but fish farms are gross, and they have been ruining the actual habitats for our wild fish.Never eat farm fish. Wild Pacific salmon is what you want.

As for the dairy thing... I knew a couple who raised their own dairy cows, full milk, cream on everything, butter, cheese you name it. Both had no health problems and lived to their late 90's. My aunt turns 100 this year, has berries with cream every day, has a pot of coffee cooked on an old wood stove in the morning...she still lives on her own, and would likely still be splitting wood if my cousins hadn't stepped in. It isn't the milk, it is in most cases all the shit they feed the cows that messes people up. You will not end up drooling in a care home because you ate shreddies with milk on them, or had a bowl of ice cream. Granted some people have an intolerance to dairy, but that is the same for anything... my brother was allergic to almost every vegetable but peas growing up....should I have refrained from eating carrots because they would have killed my brother?

You should eat natural when possible. If you can, grow your own food....or try to find a farmers market or growers co-op for things. I know not totally do able for lots... and I know how lucky I am to be able to have a huge garden/orchard.

Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood watch is the place to for questions on which fish is best to eat, ecologically speaking. Check out http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/download.aspx for regional pocket guides to fishes.

Laughing No I have to say I don't like growing boobs. Laughing How about you?

I've been eating canned tuna for years with no issues. I'm currently at a lean 158 and have been using spirlulina, organic whey, and have recently readded the tuna in the mix. I'm getting even more lean muscle growth now. Additionally, I'm feeling sharper than ever.

I'll stick with what I'm doing. Thanks.

Not trying to make you feel bad but at this stage I believe there is a person to declare everything imaginable will cause cancer/srs illness.
I just don't see the harm in eating tuna unless you're shoveling it down every chance given.
"Everything in moderation" I guess.

Though this is probably true, if I don't care enough about this sort of stuff to stop smoking and drinking copious amounts of alcohol, I definitely ain't gonna stop eating cheese. Still, even life expectancy for smokers is rising, so I like my odds.

DAMNIT! I had a post here and posted, but Mick posted at the same time and it erased.

There is no way I'm going to stop eating dairy. I already don't eat meat and that is enough restriction for me. I eat canned tuna because the real thing is way too hard to get my hands on and way too expensive for a student.

That said, I eat shitloads salmon. Last one I cooked a little too much but it still tasted fucking amazing. Rub the flesh with chives, salt, pepper and lemon and you got yourself an amazing piece of fish.

I never eat margarine or butter, I avoid saturated fats like the plague. For spreads, depending on the sandwich, it's either avocado or low fat mayo or seeded mustard.

For snacks or lunches, always salads or something with next to no fat content. My favourite snack at the moment is tuna salad - canned tuna, but fresh if ever possible. halved cherry tomatoes, diced red onion, fresh parsley, olive oil and lemon, salt, pepper, and chili to dress.

For drinks, nothing over 400kj for the whole bottle.

I have lost 3 kilos now, and with minimal exercise (I should really get on that). Funny thing is, I don't look any different. Kind of sad.

Ahlia, exercise, despite what people say, does nothing to help people lose weight. What it does is add muscle and increase your general well-being, lifespan and blood pressure and all that fun stuff. I lost 90% of my weight from diet alone after trying seven different diets and three major types of exercise. I figured out what does not work before I read up what does. Being lighter makes energy, which makes you get up and go... and it just explodes after that. Three kilos already? Nice!

Mick, its always one's choice. If you love cheese (and yes, I do miss it, soy and rice cheese is getting way better, I can give you some nice alternatives), try the sharper the cheese the better, forget that soft american cheese, you deserve better. If tuna is all one can afford, then thats good, just don't eat it right out the can! Alchohol and smoking: I love money more - get more trips and fun with the money I save, and smokes are insane prices here. Do what you love, but theres loads of small things you can do to live a better life. I would dearly love to obliterate smoking from the face of the Earth. Okay, I shut up now on that. Not everyone can be a raw foods vegetarian, that is so not me. I envy that kind of discipline!

Muscle burns more calories to maintain than fat does (and weighs more too), so your weight loss through exercise is a bit indirect. I managed to drop about 40 pounds through a rather unhealthy cycle of building up muscle (which replaced fat) and then losing that muscle mass (protein will be broken down before fats in your body unless you constantly rebuild). Not recommended. Still mad I lost my muscle mass, and hoping to be able to start getting it back this summer.

As far as diet goes, once you get beyond the basic don't-eat-crap, people's systems have different tolerances and digestive abilities. I was vegetarian for 12 years. Finally my chronic condition got so bad, I had to start eating meat and choosing foods that are gentler on my system. On bad days I'm reduced to chicken and rice. Or apple juice and corn chips like I was last week. Don't take your healthy digestive system for granted by feeding it crap, people. Makes those of us who don't have that luxury get a little peeved.

And yes, I get mad when people eat donuts in front of me when I'm in a bad flare and can't have one. It's just plain rude. Evil or Very Mad That's why I've hidden the girl scout cookies until I feel better. If stepmama's not happy, no one is happy! Razz

You know what I have noticed? I think that the path to healthy living is about as varied as religions. Very Happy

Personally, I am becoming more and more fat adapted. I like fat because my brain needs it and my brain is my favorite. Butter/Ghee from grass fed cows or coconut oil=magical and amazing fat that tastes great.

My fella was eating fluffy pancakes in front of me on Saturday morning. I didn't get mad--I just watched him eat like I was watching porn. Laughing That being said, when he bought a drum of chocolate dipped pretzels from Costco, I gave him the middle finger. They sound good!

I know dairy is an inflammatory. I am on day 27 of my elimination diet and I am fairly certain when I say it is one of the first things I am (tentatively) adding back (unless it proves symptomatic). Coffee without cream is a fucking sin.

That and gin. Gin will be reintroduced. Smile

How we treat our bodies really is a bit religious, isn't it? My gallbladder was giving up on me last year, so at the height of my super low fat diet, I was having really weird fantasies. A tiny pat of butter on toast would just about send me into ecstasy! My hair started falling out too, so I pushed myself to eat more and more guacamole and almond milk and slowing ramp up my fat intake. When I push it too far, my body gives me a not so nice reminder that it's not fully functional. Sticking to less than 3 g of fat per serving of anything may have kept me from surgery, but the rest of my body was definitely not thriving. I'm hoping that this time I'll hit the happy medium. Fat is good. But it does require a functional system to break down and absorb the molecules before anything can be optimized downstream.

That's an interesting article, Jen. My understanding is that the primal diet is similar to the specific carbohydrate diet. Once I get my fat processing under control again, I might give that another shot. My diet was just too restricted last summer when I first ran across it. I have a friend with UC who swears by it, and he's finally gained weight and feeling healthy.

Good points, Terra. It IS kind of like a religion..as it should be. We get one body, may as well treat it nice!

And yes, all these general tips are completely moot to anyone with internal issues. You've gotta do what is right for your body for sure.

Meh, I am getting to the point where I really do not care. If I die, at least I will die doing something that I enjoy. (Usually along the lines of Fucking, Smoking, Drinking and eating a piece of bleeding meat.)

ETA: (Stupid return key) Since I have started dieting and exercise, because of my ongoing health problems, I have put gone from 200 to 268. Granted my clothing still fits perfectly, I feel as though I should just keep drinking. At least when I drink I manage my weight better. My doctor doesn't even get how I can gain 68 pounds in 3 fucking months. I had cut out all meats from my diet, I quit eating fried foods(normally didnt anyhow, I would rather bake a piece of chicken because I really hate the smell of old grease) I cut back on starches and carbs and yet I still started putting on weight. Was doing close to 500 push ups a day thanks to my brief stay in jail back in December. Cut back on cigarettes, quit drinking all together. Haven't blazed since December, because of probation. I don't eat any junk food and dont even keep sugar in my house. I cut all carbonated drinks out except maybe a diet soda once a week or something. My diet consisted mainly of water, fruits and veggies. I only eat two meals a day but try to get a salad in for lunch, usually with a fat free dressing or none at all. I think the best diet I ever had was my pill diet, I lost 150 pounds in 6 months...granted I was strung out on heroin and pain pills but I lost a great amount of weight that way. Neutral

Donnor, your problem is you don't eat more often. Sumo wrestlers eat twice a day (usually pretty healthy too) so thats an example of how they gain weight really fast. Eat a lot of small meals throughout the day, eat consistently and a lot. Eat carbs, they are true energy, just not too much potato/corn/white bread heavy carbs. Sleep eight hours, please! Don't stress out, just relax, you are fantastic on surviving all that crap so long ago.

I know, sounds strange saying eat more, exercise less. But it works. Doesn't mean never eating bleeding meat or never running a lap. Did I say to eat more?

super sets with free weights. It will hurt like hell the first few times you do it, but in three months you can have seam ripping biceps (been there done that). If you want more info, including safety tips, let me know.

If I could eat more without getting sick I would. My stomach is all messed up from what I have going on so I am lucky to eat as much as I can tbh. I would also sleep 8 hours if I could, so far they haven't found a sleeping pill that helps me, my body rejects a lot of different medications. I supplement with a multivitamin every day though. I exercise a lot because it helps keep my mind busy...and I have an EXTREMELY active sex life...lol so I burn a lot of calories through out the day. I counted my intake one day and it came out to almost 1050...give or take a couple, and that was without subtracting for my exercise and "stuff" lol I was kidding about going back on drugs, my body is still trying to rebuild itself and I really would not risk hurting it more now that the doctor today told me my liver is in great shape Razz

Aidann, it depends on if your're just trying to gain weight or muscle weight (muscle weighs more than fat). If you just want fat weight or too fill out, eat lots of breads. I'm still doing the sprilulina, organic whey, and tuna (right after I come out of the gym) and clearly gaining upper body muscle mass. It really depends on what you're trying to do, but it might just be you have a really high matobolism (I'm thinking your an ectomorph), which in that case, I envy you.

Yeah I definitely have a high metabolism from what i'm told as I do eat a shittonne. Ectomorph seems to be right although a Mesomorphic version of me could be waiting to be unleeshed as I do have broad shoulders Laughing

Ran around my local park on Saturday morning for about two hours which has stations around it for bodywork. The two guys with me are absolute tanks but they can't run like me haha Razz My short term goal is big arms for July when I go to Spain so I guess the stations will help with that. anaerobic exercise isn't good for a healty body. Anaerobe means no oxygen so you don't burn glucose but you make lactic acid from it. Training your body to function with more lactic acid in it is just training your body to withstand pain. You can hold your hand in a fire, it will work as good Laughing

Aidann, when I was doing p90x, they recommended a shake post work out which was basically grape juice and protein powder. Was supposed to feed your muscles and promote building them rather than break them down, as well as get you through the post work out exhaustion. But those were intense 60-90 minute aerobic and weight training exercises (6 days a week). Seems a bit weird at first, but it satisfied my cravings after working out like nothing else. I think the exact formula was on one of their web pages, but basically just use white grape juice (100%, no sugar added, etc.) with a scoop of protein powder (I used rice based).

I love all this advice! I can tell which ones are in fine shape and those who are couch potatos. You know when you are doing the right thing when

- you never get sick, not even a cold
- you never have cavities
- you always defecate as many times as you have full meals
- you always sleep routinely at least 7+ hours
- you don't need to take any prescribed medications

If you are this way, you are doing the right thing.

By the way, anyone doing Triathlons? I'm stuck in a routine I cannot break out of, cannot cut down times or increase speed for close to a month.

anaerobic exercise will increase muscle mass. << Where the hell did I say it burns glucose. Muscle mass increase will lead to weight gain (the original question) so my point was that anaerobic will promote weight gain, aerobic promotes weight loss.

Thank you for proving my point even if you didn't mean to and were just being a smart alec Razz
