| Wondering if anyone can help me out. I got a Trojan Virus the other day and tried to take care of it. My virus scanner quarinted the virus, but it looked like core files may have been infected. I did a system restore, then restarted the laptop in safemode and ran virus + malware scans. It seems like it took care of the virus; however now when I try to start my laptop normally, it either freezes at the windows load screen or I get just a black screen with the mouse cursor. Can anyone help me out? | |

| Do you get the option to go into the bios screen when you boot?...did you delete the infected file or delete it? | |

| Yeah, I can get into the setup screens when the comp initially loads. My virus protection quarnteened 2 Trojans or 2 parts of the virus (there were 4 alerts), but could not fix the other 2. I think I took care of the 2 remaining. But now the laptop wont load windows it seems.. | |

| 1: Reboot PC 2: Soon as computer starts to power up, before it says 'Loading Windows' bla bla, hit F8. 3: On the Advanced Boot Options screen, highlight Last Known Good Configuration and then press Enter.
Which operating system is it? Is it an OEM install or do you own physical disks? What kind of PC brand is it?
There are a lot of tools to fix your problem, so don't worry, it is definitely not bricked.

| Ok, I rebooted PC, before the loading window I'm only given the options F2 "Setup" & F12 "Multiboot". Multiboot is subdivided into "Boot Menu" & "App Menu". Boot Menu is divided into three: 1) ATA HDD:, 2) ATA PI CD: and 3) PCI LAN:. App Men subcatgory is Setup. It is a Lenovo running with Windows 7. I tried to find your directions from Step 3, but there is no "Last Known Good Configuration" section. | |

| Guessing no disk then? Can you boot to safe mode at all? What happens when you select the option "1) ATA HDD"? Is there a partition there with boot drivers and shit? I don't think its the option for setup then (F2) - guessing thats your BIOS. I don't think the option would be in there. But look around. You are looking for: Startup Repair, and/or Last Known Good Configuration You find either of those you should be golden. Otherwise, you might need to get some boot drivers onto a USB or DVD and then boot with that. | |

| Nevermind, his PC boots way too fast. "ATA HDD" Should maybe give you the option to boot how you want like when you have an unexpected shut down, or give you the option to reformat. Hopefully it doesn't come to the last option* that anto said, which is booting via disk or usb. sorry, quite a typo.

| If the screen that lets you access the f8 screen goes too quickly, you can button mash f8 until it goes through without it hurting anything while you boot. | |

| If you can do a system restore to the earliest point possible. Then before removing the virus (if it's there) google the virus type to see more advice on how to get rid of it properly.

| If you can get hold of a windows disc run a windows repair. It keeps all your files but re-installs the OS aka C:\windows folder and fixes your registry. What you can try first though,is if you start it up in safe mode and all runs smoothly and fast, your problem is most likely your graphics drivers which you can download easily and re-install. Reason I say go into safe mode is coz in safe mode it disables stuff and keeps the bare basics. Nice troubleshooting step that. | |

| You got the option to F2 to Setup? Go into Setup and change your boot order to boot from the CD first. Throw in your Win7 CD, let it boot and do the repair from the CD.
If you have access to another box (and you are comfortable with this sort of thing) you could burn one of the linux ISOs to a usb stick just to go in there and poke around a bit. But best to let the Windows CD try to fix it first.
hmmm...just read back, its a Lenovo? On those, I believe F11 at boot gives access to the recovery partition (at least it did on older models). Be careful in there, it is designed to blast your drive and restore it to factory original. BUT, it may also have the option in there to create recovery CD/DVDs. So if you don't have a hard-copy Win7, you may be able to create a set from the recovery screen. Worth a look anyway.

| I have been having problems with Firefox for a little over a month. Here is what happens: I click on the icon and it is highlighted. Then it appears it is unclicked. In Task Manager, the process is running. If I leave it alone, in about ten minutes it finally opens. But it is just a white screen that is thinking, thinking, thinking. To be honest, I am not sure what happens after that because I become enraged with impatience. I have uninstalled, reinstalled. I also uninstalled for an entire month and only just reinstalled it last night (because Chrome was being a bitch, natch). It worked on start up. But when I restarted the laptop, it is back to its old tricks again. My techy sister did a scan for malware and viruses when I initially bitched about the problem. I first noticed it after I had project free TV up for a few hours. I was behind on American Horror Story!! Anyhow. It is pissing me off. It seems like it should be an easy fix, but I don't get it. Any help would be much appreciated. And if someone does have advice, speak slowly for the noob! ETA: in the interest of science, I opened Firefox. It says unresponsive script. tab browser XML 2406. If that helps. | |
