What I learned today, Potions can be used underwater....ie if you dont have underwater action item , but are relieing on an under water potion and happen to be lost underwater, you can drink another underwater potion and it resets the timer.

I learnt this today:

When beating up the end boss on the Shroud raid, don't run away from the action. Stay in close and smack him as best you can. The healers will look after you and you won't get shot to pieces and end up in the penalty box like a noob Wink

Well I learnt that you spend 150TP and get a hat from the comsmetics Department, and you get +5 spot and search on top of your hats normal ability.

So I can continue to wear the Gimp mask and not scare people

Well for Pyh i bought the +5 concentration so its +10 I think for hat now on top of the +5 Gimp mask

The skills don't stack as they are competence bonus, I looked it up.

Btw bunny hat gives +5 to jump and +3 bluff and +3 umd when wielding a scroll or wand. I bought it because it looked cute, but eh.. it looked more like a bucket helmet with ears.. Razz But at least I can twitch my nose with amazing vigor!

I learned that shooting oozes with bow and arrow splits them creating more oozes. I told Edrahil this and he knew! HE KNEW! Still he let me shoot them happily... while he was probably laughing behind his screen Sad

Those crappy sun flasks, murder undead. Unfortunatly I had thrown a heap away in the harbour as they looked cool when you threw them.

Wandering around with Grace today and with little else left but my cookie jar and sun flasks I started to tosh them at Undead

We they can do around 80 damage so use them if you have them

PostSubject: Re: Epiphany (or what I learned today)   Epiphany (or what I learned today) - Page 2 EmptyWed Jan 12, 2011 11:01 am

Today I learned that there will nearly always be someone who fecks up worse than you in a PUG. I'm also going to stop telling groups that I don't know a quest that well or have only run it once or twice. No one else ever seems to admit to this. And going by the way some play, I'm not buying their 'experienced' silence. I joined an elite tempest spine raid this afternoon, thinking it would be good to do while saturday night was fresh in my head. Of course I was the sole person who admitted to having only done a couple of runs before. Things went okay for me up to the end boss, except for a lava bath near the start when I had bad lag and nearly died. That aside, I was happy. Had kept up, contributed to the kills, tried to be self sufficient as much as possible. During the run it became obvious that the group leader was new to the raid too and he was playing catch up for a lot of it. Others took over, which worked. At the end, people were sorta looking at each other when deciding who was going in. Eventually I volunteered and then another said that they would tank 30 seconds later. Fine by me. We both went in to smack the big guy around.

And we both got blown off the mountain ^^

After an initial panic cos I realised this wasn't the sort of party where folk would come rescue, I made it back inside and drank some pots to heal up. From the look of the red bars everyone else had piled in. People started dying fast. I started to head back up following a WF but they out ran my slow fighter and I soon lost them. Then I got lost ^^ Really lost.

This is when I realised I had never taken note of where the portal to the end boss was. And I'm thinking, stupid Beth. Eventually I realise I've gone too far and back track until I see someone at the raised platform in a large cavern. I latch onto him and we make it to the portal and he tells me to wait so we can all group up before going in. It appears that by now everyone was blown off the mountain. Some are still showing dead but the healer is picking them up, two have recalled and gone. So we wait, and two more arrive. And we wait ... and then the 'I'm lost' messages start to come in. In the end three people needed guiding back to the end boss portal.

This made me happy. I was not the only lost person. And I now know that most folk who are inexperienced never tell this. So I'm thinking of not telling it too.

We finished the raid short handed, I got a very nice 13k xp, didn't die although 9 others did, and took screen shots of the puzzle so I could learn it. I had fun and sent the excellent healer a gift in the mail ^^

I also confirmed to myself that I'm not a great map reader. Even with the excellent help of the restless isles map in ddo wiki, I still managed to end up at the volcano instead of the compound. Meh.

but be careful about being new and not saying anything. at low levels it doesnt really matter but a new person to the shroud could be potentially devastating to the entire raid, costing lots of time and money. in higher level raids and epics, healers can wind up drinking 100K platinum worth of pots keeping the party alive, just to have one new guy screw it up for everyone.

that said, there are times i havent felt the need to tell people i am new because of whatever reason; and there even have been times that i wasn't new but caused entire raids to wipe. shit happens, we all learn somehow. Smile

dont ever feel bad about being new, everyone in our guild is new! Smile

There are a lot of times I tell a group that this is the first time I've run X, or I'm still not that familiar with Y, or whatever. I figure if they know that, no assumptions are made that will hamper the group. As Anto says, I haven't always felt the need to do that, but I can usually get a decent feel for whether I should or not. I have no issues with announcing my newbie status. We all started somewhere.

Sometimes better to just say it has been a long time since you ran a certain quest...but I always think it is better to admit it, in the long run people will appreciate it more.

BTW What I have learned Do not put your Mnem pots on a hotbar next to anything you switch to periodically during a quest, I did and used 4 pots (while being nearly full in mana) because of a hurried click on the wrong square....DOH. Not so bad with the 10-35 sp pots but the bigger ones hurt alot.

I sometimes decided to just hang back a little if I wasn't sure what I was doing in a quest. However when it came to raids I always sent the leader a tell asking if first-timers were ok. If they said no, then they're arses and I don't want to group with them anyway and if they said yes, they often talked me through it and I learnt a lot Wink

Some people actually like to have first-timers, because there's a superstition going around that you get better pulls if a first-timer pops the big chest.

its not a superstition, you do get better pulls with first timers opening the chests. has to be lol

PostSubject: Re: Epiphany (or what I learned today)   Epiphany (or what I learned today) - Page 2 EmptyFri Jan 14, 2011 6:25 am

The thing about raids is that after 4/5 runs you begin to feel confident that you know it well and then somebody else tells you something new...

For example, when I was on my 11th or 12th Reaver's, I felt confident enough to lead the group. We had a first-timer so I quite happily started imparting my knowledge, only to find out that there was something I'd never heard about! I didn't know that if you stand next to the Reaver, he gives of charges and can refill your mana... good for casters eh?

Also, at that point I didn't know the puzzle and I had no idea what to do if you were the one who had to go get the lever after being given fly. In fact, I still have no idea what to do if given fly.

Also, every leader has a different approach to some of the raids and the most hotly contested one has to be the Hound of Xoriat. Just read the Khyber DDO forum... there's a whole thread discussing the best way to go about things! So basically, even if you're a first-timer or not, the leader will normally explain his tactic and what you learnt the previous time goes out the window!
