it is all to do with order everything must go left to right following the bodmas rules, so there is only one answer even though some calculators say differently

48/2(9+3) = x

I got 2???

(2 x 9) + (2 x 3) = 24

48/ 24 = 2

Right hand side is done 1st. Left hand side divided by the right hand side answer???

I have to say you made me think =/ Did it in my head and the first thing I got was 1152 Then I was like eh no wait, right hand side has to be done first. Read prior post.

x = 24 * 12 <-- Division and Multiplication from left to right so first 48 / 2

x = 288

Depends. The reason the calculators may be doing that is because there is no multiplication sign after:

48/2*(9 + 3) = x

Therefore it counts all of what's in the brackets as the thing you need to divide with.

Two ways of doing it, but the machine is too dumb to compute if you provide it in a wrong way:

Oh no wait that's totally wrong, would've meant / is multiplication, rather than divide. Noone saw that, it was late Ooops. Note to self, wine doesn't help focus but it does for other people =/

i came up with 288 also.

first add the ( ) then do the division problem then multiple the answers you get from each. took me a very long second, it's been years, since i was in school >.< not saying how long...LOL

that'll teach me to do math when I should be in bed. I used to do that in uni too - get all the calculations right, then mess up with the simple arithmetic. I even got gravity to be 98.5 newtons (it should be 9.85 N btw )

Mel, no - you don't calculate right to left - you calculate left to right, but you also have to obey the bodmas rules which means you do the brackets first, then you do the division, then the multiplication.

I suck at math, used to be gifted in it but prefer writing or creative subjects. Many people now refer to calculators though for simple mental arithmetic calculations. My friends were just talking about their Accounting& Finance course and are some of the smartest people, high achieving. Had to use fingers though, if not calculator to do adding and taking away lol I can do mental arithmetic. My sibling took the sciency maths career route though after her education, sucks at art and writing however...

Well you may choose to believe me or not - the IT guy The problem lies in whether those are 2 brackets of 9+3 or the whole fractal is multiplied by it. Different calculators are differently programmed therefore provide either of the solutions.
