haha! What an intriguing dilema!
Spoiler:
Under the principals of bodmas, brackets get calculated first so that would be the 9 + 3 = 12, then you have to do the division and multiplication, left to right so you have 48 /2 = 12 x 12 = 288 So it seems that the logic function of a couple of those calculators is incorrectly input. Just goes to show you that the brain is not about to replaced anytime soon

it is all to do with order everything must go left to right following the bodmas rules, so there is only one answer even though some calculators say differently

I have to say you made me think =/ Did it in my head and the first thing I got was 1152 Then I was like eh no wait, right hand side has to be done first. Read prior post.

Right answer Bekah, but 48/2 is 24 not 12
x = 48 / 2 (9 + 3) x = 48 / 2 (12) <-- Brackets are first x = 24 * 12 <-- Division and Multiplication from left to right so first 48 / 2 x = 24 * 12 <-- then 24 * 12 x = 288

Spoiler:
288 - you do the brackets first, then go left to right
Base 8 is like Base 10 really....
...if you're missing two fingers.

It could go either way, I voted 2 cause in my head it looked something like 48/(2(9+3)=2, and to some of the calculators probably. It's an interesting question though

I got 1152 at first, by doing:
Oh no wait that's totally wrong, would've meant / is multiplication, rather than divide. Noone saw that, it was late Ooops. Note to self, wine doesn't help focus but it does for other people =/
first add the ( ) then do the division problem then multiple the answers you get from each. took me a very long second, it's been years, since i was in school >.< not saying how long...LOL

that'll teach me to do math when I should be in bed. I used to do that in uni too - get all the calculations right, then mess up with the simple arithmetic. I even got gravity to be 98.5 newtons (it should be 9.85 N btw )
Mel, no - you don't calculate right to left - you calculate left to right, but you also have to obey the bodmas rules which means you do the brackets first, then you do the division, then the multiplication.

I suck at math, used to be gifted in it but prefer writing or creative subjects. Many people now refer to calculators though for simple mental arithmetic calculations. My friends were just talking about their Accounting& Finance course and are some of the smartest people, high achieving. Had to use fingers though, if not calculator to do adding and taking away lol I can do mental arithmetic. My sibling took the sciency maths career route though after her education, sucks at art and writing however...

Well you may choose to believe me or not - the IT guy The problem lies in whether those are 2 brackets of 9+3 or the whole fractal is multiplied by it. Different calculators are differently programmed therefore provide either of the solutions.

If/ when I have a kid, I probably won't be of much help with homework =/ If so, must pop a kid out with some sciency mathsy IT cute nerd traits. Right, well thanks, atleast I now know what sort of sperm donor to look out for and the kind of baby to selectively breed.

I don't think it works that way I'm not much of brains in chemistry Although I'm quite sure the kiddo will be a handsome/beautiful one. *looks at Tel*
Nope. No plans for that.

Dug this up:
Quote :
The distributive property of multiplication CLEARLY states that the 2(9+3) is an entire statement and CANNOT be broken up. 2(9+3) follows the distributive property which can be rewritten as (2*9+2*3). Let me repeat the 2 outside of the parenthesis follows the distributive property of multiplication and must be factored and simplified before performing any other operations on it. You do NOT compute this expression from left to right until you use Algebra to simplify the statement 2(9+3).
So this can be rewritten as: 48 / (2*9 + 2*3)
Which leaves us with
48 / 24 = 2
Answer = 2.

how can 48 be divided into 288 anyway?
