PostSubject: Build advice   Build advice EmptySat Aug 13, 2011 5:25 pm

So for a friend that is just starting out in DDO and wants to run a pally, is this a viable build? Remember that it is a first toon, so we're talking 28 pt and less twink gear, few tomes, etc. It's important the build work well at early levels as well, I don't want it to be too frustrating so he quits playing. I've never built or run a pally before, this is just off what I researched in the forums, so I need to hear from you paladin people Smile

Paladin bible: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=218542

First toon, eh? Not meaning to rain on your parade, but I'd recommend something else.

There is very little room for error in building a pally. Be sure to have him read the guide if he absolutely wants a pally.

I'd say have him compare this build to Junt's suggestions. They should match up pretty closely if not exactly.

My pally (Deesnider) was my first toon and I screwed him up 3 times - both before and after reading Junt's guide.

So far, I've spent 1 greater heart of wood, 2 lesser hearts, and 1 true heart.

And I never play him anymore... lol

My recommendation is to have him roll a barbarian instead.

And that guide is here: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=296816

Here is Junt's suggestion (looks the most similar to yours). Looks like you borrowed two build points from str and put them into wisdom for spell access. However, a pally can wait on spells as they aren't very effective at lower levels. Put the point into str instead as Junts recommends and wait a few levels for your spells. The extra strength will always be needed.

VIII. Sample Human THF DPS

Lawful Good Human Paladin 20

Str: 17 + 5 level ups (6 item, 2 tome, 3 exceptional, 1 human = 34)
Dex: 8
Con: 14 (6 item, 2 tome = 22)
Int: 8 (2 sp/level)
Wis: 8 (16 with tome and item)
Cha: 17 (DM4 with +3 tome; 26-28 modified)

28 point: 16 str, 13 con, (use the human enhancement on con instead of str)

Feats:

1: Toughness
1: Two-handed fighting
3: Power Attack
6: Extend Spell
9: Improved Two-handed Fighting
12: Improved critical: Slashing weapons
15: Greater Two-handed Fighting
18: skill focus: Use Magic Device or Stunning Blow (to taste)

Skills: Use Magic device and balance; 2 ranks in tumble to permit tumbling. +2 tome, add some jump

Knight of the Chalice 1-3 (8 ap)
Courage of Good 1-2 (3 ap, pre-req)
Energy of the Templar 1-2 (3 ap, pre-req)
Divine Sacrifice 1-3 (6 ap)
Divine Might 1-4 (10 ap)
Extra Lay on Hands 1-3 (6 ap)
Extra Smiting 1-4 (10 ap, pre-req)
Exalted Smiting 1-4 (10 ap)
Racial Toughness 1-2 (3 AP)
Paladin Toughness 1-2 (3 ap)
Follower of the Sovereign Host (2 ap, pre-req)
Unyielding Sovereignty (4 ap, pre-req)
Human adaptability: Strength
Human improved recovery 1-2
Paladin Weapons of Good
Paladin Charisma 1 (if needed for evenness)

Gilders was also my first toon nd I screwed him up a bit but I'm glad I started with a Pally as I feel I learnt more about the game in general than I would have, had I started with a barb or fighter.

I think the build you've come up with is pretty solid... UMD is a good idea as a skill, but I'd probably make a few suggestions regarding the feats....

I'd suggest not taking extend at lvl 6 and pushing all the THF feats forward one.... take extend at 15 (that's when it's really needed with Divine Favour AND Zeal), also instead of taking the extra +3 UMD at 18, maybe take a second toughness feat.

Junts' guide is indeed the bible, and I've taken lots of inspiration from it, however, my TR Pally is more my own build that I have come up with after reading what is in that thread.

I've also noticed that there is no Divine Might IV (DM IV) in this build.. in that case, might I suggest starting with 16 cha and raising STR (or CON) a little more to start with? With a +2 CHA tome, your friend will be able to get DM III still.

Build advice Empty
PostSubject: Re: Build advice   Build advice EmptySat Aug 13, 2011 7:33 pm

I'm not sure about the whole "waiting longer for spells" thing, just because if this is a first toon for someone trying out ddo and not sure if he will like it, getting spells is one of those things that is all "yay fun!" for a first timer especially. I'm trying to build this from the perspective of a first timer unsure of the whole thing.

I went and tried to drop CHA to 16 and add to STR, but I can only add one more point to STR, and then I have a leftover I put in CON, which meant I had odd numbers in STR, CON, and CHA. That doesn't seem like a good idea. Putting the extra all into CON though gives me a bit more hp and an even number, so I think I'll go with that.

I did follow Junts very closely - I know enough to know I don't know when it comes to paladins Razz I won't have him read the guide though, he knows nothing about ddo and is already a bit intimidated by it all. I suspect the guide and stats and feats and all will freak him out unless he gets it a little at a time. That's why I'm building it for him to start out. I realize this is not an easy class for a first timer, but I'm a strong believer in "try what you think you like first." Rogue isn't an easy first class either, but I'm glad I did it. If he really doesn't like it, he's already in and will then have an idea of what he likes/doesn't like, and I can help him try another class out. He won't be running alone either; I have a lvl 4 rogue I made and set aside for this. I'll keep the barb info in mind as a suggestion in case that happens Smile

Thanks to both of you for the advice!

Pallies and rangers are a good first class imo, even tho 99% of the time the first build is screwed up. They are versatile and have a lot of options.

Matter of fact, I don't think any first build is ever done 'correctly'. Its all about having fun really. Everyone messes up their first build, or even their first few builds if you are me. Razz

Hehe =)

The point I was trying to make about Extend is that it's only useful on a Pally for divine favour and Zeal as they are 2 minute buffs and they greatly boost DPS. As Zeal is a level 4 spell, it only becomes available at level 14, so that's why I'd tend to take extend at 15.

Yep, I changed the feats around as you recommended as well, though I'll leave the last option of UMD vs. toughness to him. By lvl 18 I don't think he'll be needing my help anymore ^^

lol Jill, I just saw yesterday that they sell anti-mummy elixirs!!!! Clearly they heard my pleas Razz

Radiant Savant, is the best, Jaayse or Jill will have a good one, Zog has Taykare.

I found this little bit for you

32 point radiant servant build:

Human
True Neutral? (I dont like getting shot with unholy arrows, and some good stability items, as well as Light and Darkness shield from the Inspired Quarter area)

Basic Stats
STR = 10
DEX = 9 (dump stat)
CON = 15 (odd, but made even with human adaptability tier 1)
INT = 10 (gets basis survival skills)
WIS = 17 (odd, but made even with human adaptability tier 2)
CHA = 14

Skills
[Jump] - Very Important (This is a FPS after all. 10 is a good number to shoot for.)
[Balance] - Very Important (you dont want to get knocked down all the time.)
[Tumble] - (at least 1... 10 would be great... not needed as much w/ feather item. 30 gets you side flips 40 gets front flips.)
Skills are basic jump, tumble, balance, maybe spread some to haggle or concentration after decently skilled (If you want to have UMD, it will be gimped, but you can forfeit some Tumble and Jump skill to put your point in UMD every level, but it will only be 1/2 a skill point per level, so you will have to augment UMD with EVERY booster item and clickie you can get).

Basic trained feats:
Toughness

Empower HEALING meta (NOT Empower Spell meta, they don't stack but they DO cost spell points to cast) then

Heighten meta and

Extend meta (I like heighten first but whichever), then 4 Quicken meta by level 10 for blade barrier and L12 radiant burst.

Stat increase every 4 levels is wisdom of course, as this is a pure class divine caster.

Enhancements
For enhancements, I stick closely with the tier one and 2 Radiant pre-reqs including Follower Of The Sovereign host (longsword + board spec, which lasts for your whole login session btw), and beyond that for filler I try to work in tier 1 cleric Improved Empower Healing amp, cleric Extra Turn and cleric Wand/Scroll Mastery, class WIS asap, racial WIS, racial toughness + racial CON by level 12, and class CHA as needed to avoid being odd while power-leveling in Delera's tomb.

Basic Strategy
Radients are inherently obliged to have the best CHA boosting gear they can find, so leverage at least an Eagles Splendor wand; and buy some invisible pots or a clickie (invis is essential for radiants, as it allows 'stealth turning' of undead where you invis out and then dart into the center of a waiting clump of inactive undead and turn them all before they disperse having spotted an approach; having a bunch of expeditious retreat clickies on hand is useful for this tactic).
On missions with large enough proportions of undead to warrant, always load the spell "Seek Eternal Rest" which is +4 to turn power, but you can usually load another spell and use a 'Sacred' booster item for a modest +2 turn power boost to serve in lieu of the +4 spell.

Tier 3 Radient Servant is unfortunately not likely to be made available any time soon by turbine, so in the meantime, we make do with the existing capstone.
Also note that superior potency level 1 (+50%) and superior ardor level 1 (+75%) do boost your aura, and supposedly your healing burst, so keep an eye out for those items with that boost on it. So too, always turn on empower heal, maximize and quicken metas when using aura or burst, they are free and essential power boosters.

You really are better off to stick with a pure heal.
As a healer you are in much demand in groups. You will have to fight undead with spells and later on with blade barrier.

Adding some fighter will weaken your build, not improve it.

You will just have 2 extra feats to choose, as one your human and the other is you wont have a past life.

Toughness is always a good bet for at least one.

Aye, I'd suggest you think very carefully before doing a fighter build. Clerics never make for very good fighters - they still do pretty poor DPS and have less spell points to heal the party. At higher levels you will find it much harder to solo and you will run out of spell points quickly Sad

The cleric capstone is also pretty nice and you can only get it if you are pure - it gives you the ability to cast divine intervention on yourself, or another party member, which means that they can't die!

TY Jill! I think I may just redo my points Smile Whats best for soloing then? I just want to be able to solo with my character and not have to wait for someone to help. Also I thought Anto said I should always put a point in tumbling for any character?

Mikhaila

You can always buy a hire.

If you put up a group a cleric will always get hires. ( any cleric other than 2 known exceptions Fatherkline and Zogs mate Vykrest always have friends)

You can always summon a pet (monster) to help you fight as well

Alright Tod. I read the Cleric Radiant Servant page on wiki and Realized what I was missing. Thing is I can't get it. I ranked up and went to go check what I needed BUT it's unavailable to me. Empower Healing Spell is suppose to be available at level 1 but for some reason it lists it as things I can't do. :S Do I need to reset my skills? It's the only thing I am missing for Cleric Radiant Servant I

Empower Healing is a feat, not an enhancement. So you have the option of doing a feat exchange for it (changing out a feat you already have for it) or waiting until the next level you get a feat and taking it then.
