Sounds like he's church way, lvl 3, visiting the country and has reached far enough into his studies to begin to preach. Preaching can be done at a couple of commonly visited places in a town but the most usual one to choose is the market. It's not often seen as it takes a long time to complete sufficient study to reach this point, which is why you've likely not come across it before.

When a churchway preaches there are two effects. The first is that they are attempting to gain PVD (divine points) which assists their progress to lvl 4, in the same way that making points for the county assists stateway people. The secondary effect is that it may alter your transcendental menu.

The churchway player is hoping their preaching message is read by many, but how well they do in gaining PVD depends on whether they have chosen to preach a message that is in conflict with the players transcendental menus, or in harmony with it.

Given that the transcendental menu has not been fully coded IG, it will however have no affect on your character even if your T Menu changes slightly.
