36 pt Paladin Defender of Siberys

Well, Anto's inspired me to think about Gilders' next life and I'll probably work on something over the next few days and TR him before the end of the weekend.

What I'm looking for:

High AC
At least 750 HP
Full Dragonmarl of Sentinels line

What I need:
One of: Combat Expertise,Diehard, Shield Mastery, Tower Shield Proficiency (think I'll go for Combat Expertise as it improves his AC, might also take shield mastery or Tower Shield Proficiency instead of a Toughness feat).

The one thing I'm still not sure of is the race he should be. Humans get an extra feat, which for a Pally is really important because they are really feat-starved, however, I think Dwarves can get the highest AC and a few more HP.

here's first kick at the cat...i'm sure stuff was taken out of order...i started strength and con at 17 b/c of human bonuses but that's just a finesse. i included a barbarian past life (not sure what you actually have) but that could be replaced with toughness. i had to make some tough decisions...you wanted lots of hit points, and (personally) i feel that divine sacrifice and divine might are great dps for when you're trying to build aggro, but YMMV. if you were to sacrifice some of those you could get more lay of hands or whatever else you were looking for.

I'm probably going to roll something up for myself tomorrow and already have a few ideas as to what I'm looking for.

I'd definitely go for more Dex because I want a higher AC and so I'd completely dump wisdom. I'll go for DM III, but won't bother with all the extra smites and Div Sac III. Maxing the auras for AC is essential and I like having 5 LoH. That's all I have for sure atm... I'm gonna give it some thought.

As for skill points, again a bit starved but I want to go max Intim and UMD.

i wonder if it might not be a good idea to hold off TRing at all and running a different character up to 20 until the new enhancement system comes out. i imagine a straight paladin would be fine, but it will be interesting to see how the 12/6/2 mutt builds fare

I like the fact that he has an AC of 33 even when using THF, as he doesn't take much damage at all, especially with heavy fort and what have you.

(65 + 10% from Defender stance). Things are going well for Gilders and a nice and easy Delera's pt 4 and VoN 3 farm should get him to 12 (then Shadow Crypt! Hmmm, maybe I should flag one of my alts so they can open...).

If you want to buy a class - the iconic bladeforged paladins are pretty darn nice right out of the box, with preset paths (my pre-set build put a little too many skill points in Concentration, which I will change whenever they make LR hearts of wood for bladeforged). If you roll a fleshy, then they're a little more complicated, however my information is about 2 years out of date. My first toon was a human paladin and I reincarnated him way too many times because I didn't know what I was doing (classic example was adding a rogue level at level 19 - lol).

Junts used to have a good guide for paladins but even he admits it's out of date (still a good read though with good pointers):

Main thing bladeforged have that other races don't is reconstruct (an arcane spelll) as a divine caster (paladin) - which is really nice for self-healing along with the Lay on Hands (which I always save for party members, unless I'm out of mana or have too much trash on me). With the right UMD items and charisma boosts, I am able to use just about any scroll or item (with the exception of artificer stuff) as well.

Paladins are also finally able to achieve meaningful armor class and damage reduction and can truly tank epic quests. There are some nice enhancements for "sword-and-board" paladins and having bastard sword proficiency give you glancing blows, like a two-handed weapon. In my opinion, the main thing a real pally does is intimidate enemies away from the rest of the party to protect the casters and allow the melee and rogues to flank attack. If you like pushing buttons while melee-ing, then a paladin might be for you. I personally love being in the thick of combat, chopping away and using a variety of buffs/spells/boosts at the same time (a high concentration score definitely helps).

Pros - Tanking, spellcasting, reconstruct, Warforged/Bladeforged equipment (docents). Paladins have insane will/fortitude saves and are immune to fear. Ability to cast divine spells useful to a party (deathward and true resurrection especially). Along with a good bard, arcane, and artificer, you can really help round out the buffs on a raid party. Another useful thing pallies do is spot heal (lay on hands is an instant 300-400hp heal for anyone not in lich form) and raise/buff dead party members - the main healers really appreciate this.

Cons - Can't TR or LR (yet). Paladins are great tanks but not top-tier DPS. You also can't do any of the rogue/artificer stuff, but that's OK. Paladins have traditionally been thought of as gimpy (and as "healers"), but that has changed a little. I swore that I would never roll another paladin, but Chromedreams is now my favorite toon - lol.

No need to buy any classes. Nice evasion, good survivability, good heal amp. I'm running it to get a pally life. Found the level of damage a bit frustrating in the lower levels but doing nicely now. It's a bit of a cockroach build. You'll be the last person standing.
