Chat Box

Has the chat box thing been working ok for everyone? I notice it boots you out after 5 mins inactivity, but doesnt seem like much of a pain to me (yet).

if people wanted we could embed the html chat on this page, but you would have to log into it separately from the forum (which is easily remedied by just setting it to auto log in) but its a 3rd party, not part of the forum.

could make it a widget, would have to be smaller than this, but just to give you guys an idea what it is:

i added the chat box to the widgets, and am messing with sizes and stuff.

the advantage to using the 3rd party chat is that as a widget it can work on ANY forum page, while you are posting, reading, ect; while the other one only works on the main page.


is up to you guys, as you can see it doesnt really slow things down at all.

i guess the disadvantage of it is, that 200 pixels is as small as i can make it, and it still winds up scrolling the screen just a bit..

i'll leave em both running so everyone can decide

Honestly, first thing I thought to myself when I registered here is that the chat that came with the forum was better than chatango. I've been Googling around but all the other embedables are worse than chatango. If it were possible, I'd say you should try AJAX chat but it's not.

well, some basic pros and cons:

built in chatbox:

pros:

one click log in
has /me command
loads very quickly

cons:

logs out after 5 mins inactivity
no whisper/private chat
no avatar (but who cares about that lol)
can only see the chat box on the main page


chatango:

pros:

can enable sounds to play on message
can have private messages/whispers/avatars
can open into whole screen window if desired
is viewable on every forum page
can post anon (also a con)
can post video and also record audio

cons:

separate log in (to chatango), would need to make your own account there [example: i am antocapone, 1 word, on chatango)
anon chat has its drawbacks
is a tiny bit slower than built in chatbox

I just like the ability to chat will group members

I'm having a heck of a time getting registered on Chatango, seems Miss_ isn't allowed the _ and Miss is taken, or any variation of...lol

I liked the original one, but I like the advantage of being able to see it on every page.

Having it on every page actually feels like a hassle to me. I tend to open pages in tabs, so it pongs on all the windows, and I forget which window I'm logged into.

yes i have issues with it...technical issues that prolly has nothing to do with the chat box itself but the user

keeps booting me everytime i flip thru the forum *sigh* don't know if i signed up on it right

Devin was just singing a song he wrote in chat. Gave him a 10 minute ban.

Now we know the chat's limits.

yea, i noticed it gets kinda touchy sometimes. i recommend, in devins sake, to not use so many breaks (dont hit enter after every sentence very quickly, the chat box is big enough to fit many lines of chat). i'm going to mess with it some later.

had to ban an anon user today. if anyone has any issues with other people on the chat let me know. i can look through it, find the user, and restrict their ip, even if they are anon.

is a drawback about the automatic spam thing, but the saved chat history is a plus. saves the need for screenshots.

I use Opera and chat worked fine for the first day, now I can't get it to appear unless I go to FF. :/

Anyone else able to see it using Opera?

I'll mess with my settings this weekend, to see if that helps.

It's been mysteriously working again just fine since last night, so we shall see.
